What is WIPO?
WIPO is the global forum for intellectual property policy, services, information and cooperation.
We are a self-funding, specialized agency of the United Nations, dedicated to making IP work for innovation and creativity.
At WIPO we believe that IP and innovation go hand-in-hand. IP is about rewarding people for their ideas and original creations. It is about encouraging businesses to invest in innovations and new solutions. It is a means of enabling innovation and creativity for the benefit of all.
Why WIPO?
Because for IP to work well – so people everywhere can benefit from it – the international IP system needs to be efficient. It needs to be easily accessible worldwide. And it needs a set of rules – agreed internationally – which balance the interests of those who produce and those who consume the fruits of innovation and creativity. Meeting these needs is what drives our work at WIPO.
Our role is to enable governments, businesses and individuals throughout our 186 member states to realize the potential of IP as a driver of innovation, because we believe that – in every society – innovation is one of the most powerful forces for human progress.
